A watchdog group, Imo Awareness Coalition, IAC, has expressed concern over ugly incidents last Sunday, which led to the arrest by the Police, of a former Governor of Imo State and senator representing Imo West District, Senator Rochas Okorocha.
Okorocha was arrested by the Police after he unsealed Royal Palm Estate, Owerri, which was sealed by the Imo State government.
He had accused some of the Governor’s aides of using thugs to attack him and destroyed some of his vehicles.
Reacting to the development, IAC said Imo State “should not be turned into a gangster’s paradise, where thugs and hoodlums do have field day, a development which is capable of making our dear state lawless”
In a statement signed by Fidelis Echendu, Publicity Secretary of the Coalition in Owerri and made available to newsmen, the IAC stated that the unsavoury events of last Sunday at Royal Palm Estate, Owerri calls for concern and worry.
“We are abreast with issues which led to the confrontation, but we are particularly disturbed how hoodlums and thugs, as seen in the video footage and photos of the incident which went viral on the internet, were allowed into the melee, a development which is indeed worrisome and disturbing.
“This trend is capable of turning our state into an abode of lawlessness, which will not augur well for our state. The peace of our dear state remains paramount and one would have imagined the level of violence that would have engulfed the State if the matter had escalated.
The IAC sued for peace, urging both parties to use legal process to resolve issues t rather resorting to desperate measures particularly the use of thugs to settle and resolve disputes
